Full Text

SPIRIT OF SLAVERY.—A Writer in the Richmond Inquirer has industriously examined the ancient statutes of the Province of Massachusetts, ostensibly to show that abolitionists have no right to reproach Virginia for her oppressive enactments.— The real effect of the publication will doubtless be, to show the people of Virginia how abominable their own more atrocious laws look when pointed out by themselves. Candid and conscientious Virginians will not need a prompter to see, that the fact of oppressive laws being necessary to preserve slavery, is only an additional reason why slavery should be abolished.— That was the way they reasoned in Massachusetts, and that is the way they will reason in Virginia, NO DOUBT.—N. Y. Evan.
