An Exciting Drill by the Hose Companies Yesterday Afternoon.
The four hose companies of the city, Turner Hook and Ladder Hose company, Second Ward, Sunset, and Missions, had a very effective and exciting trial on Main plaza yesterday afternoon. The colored hose company was not represented for some reason, although they were ordered by the chief to be present.
The contest started off with an order from the chief to attach to the hydrants. A simultaneous start was made from the center of the plaza by each company to the four corners of the plaza. The boys ran as they never ran before. The Missions attached first, and were back to the start in no time. Second ward came second, Hook and Ladders third and Sunsets fourth.
Another start was made to obey the command, Uncouple hose and get back. The Missions again came back first. The hose wrench of the Hook and Ladders broke and delayed them some time, and the Second Warders and Sunsets did not understand orders.
A third order was given, "Couple hose and get water." A magnificent dash was then made by the boys, and the Missions attached first and ran out with their hose, with the Second Warders second. The Hook and Ladders, however, coupled their hose this time like clock-work and a great shout was sent up when they threw first water. This ended the trial, and after throwing water for some minutes, the boys rolled up their hose and returned to their truck houses. Great credit is due the Hook & Ladders for their achievement, as they were handicapped by having only six men at their reel, and besides were wedged into the narrow space between Deutsch's corner and the pile of rocks at the northeast corner of the plaza, while the other companies had a clear run.
