GOLDWATER CHARTS CONSERVATIVE WAY

By Harlan Trott

C.S. Monitor 12-15

The role the nation's right-wing Republicans may play in the 1960 political campaign is being blueprinted by Senator Barry Goldwater (R) of Arizona in a cross-country speaking tour.

"IF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE GONE SOFT, THEN I WOULD SUGGEST TO SENATOR KENNEDY: THIS IS THE DIRECT RESULT OF THE PERPETUAL-CARE POLICIES OF THOSE IN CONTROL OF THE DEMOCRAT ADMINISTRATION WHO HAVE SPENT 25 YEARS SUBSTITUTING GOVERNMENTAL SUBSIDIES FOR INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY.

"For 25 years, the very wing of the party that Senator Kennedy represents has been saying to the American public: 'Don't tackle that job yourself, it's too hard for you, let the government do it for you.' "

AT IOWA CITY AND OTHER CITIES ALONG THE WAY, SENATOR GOLDWATER IS EXPLAINING HOW "THE APOSTLES OF THE WELFARE STATE" HAVE ALTERED THE SYMBOLIC IMAGE OF UNCLE SAM INTO "A NATIONAL WET NURSE - DISPENSING A COCKEYED KIND OF PATENT MEDICINE LABELED 'SOMETHING FOR NOTHING,' AND PASSING OUT SOOTHING SYRUP AND RATTLES AND PACIFIERS IN RETURN FOR GRATEFUL VOTES."

The moral that Senator Goldwater is drawing for these splinter groups is: "We don't strengthen our nation or build character by taking the struggle out of life." He says the majority of people still know this "even though it may be a new thought for John Kennedy and his let-government-do-it-for-you crowd."

SENATOR GOLDWATER IS TELLING CONSERVATIVES EVERYWHERE ALONG THE WAY THAT "WHAT IS AT STAKE IS LOVE, HONOR, JUSTICE, TRUTH, AND MAN'S UNDERSTANDING OF HIS RELATIONSHIP TO ALMIGHTY GOD."
