Earl Clifford, Spokane mining man interested in the Peters Creek Mining Company, passed through Juneau on the Columbia this morning, on his way to the operations, flying in from Anchorage.

Clifford said the two-yard drag-line on the creek is expected to produce even more money this year than last, when a season's total of $240,000 was realized.

The story of the Peters Creek Mining Company's success really began only two years ago, Clifford said, when John McDonald, New York construction man, joined the company.

McDonald's introduction to the mining business and his resultant success is an interesting short story.

Fresh from big building projects in the East, and knowing nothing of mining in the least, McDonald watched the Peters Creek dragline operations one day two years ago. Finally he stepped up to the superintendent of operations.

"Is that all there is to this gold mining—moving dirt?" he asked.

"Right," replied the superintendent.

"Well, you're all wrong," McDonald is understood to have replied. "If I couldn't move twice as much dirt as that outfit is moving, I'd lose money on any contract in the East for digging basements!"

McDonald's bluff was called, and it is understood he bought into the company and took over superintending the mining—"digging" to him.

"The first year he increased production four hundred percent!" Clifford laughed today as the Columbia sailed.
