Atlanta baseball fans who have been waiting for an opportunity to get a glimpse of Thomas "Pea-Eye" Butts, celebrated Atlanta star, are expected to turn out in near-record numbers tonight for the exhibition battle between the Atlanta Black Crackers and Baltimore Elite Giants, scheduled for 8:15 p. m. at the new Herndon Memorial Stadium.
Butts has made a remarkable record since moving up from the Atlanta Black Crackers to the big league. In addition to being one of the mainstays for the Elite Giants for around ten years, Butts has made history in the annual "East-West Classic," as well as in Mexico.
WASHINGTON. ROMBY
TO JOIN ELITE ROSTER
Atlanta fans will also be delighted to see Johnny Washington and Robert Romby in action in the Baltimore lineup.
Washington played first base for the Fort Benning Red Sox during the war, and made quite a hit with local fans with his superb all-around play. Romby was the ace hurler for the Fort Benning nine and has been going good since joining the Elites after being honorably discharged.
Other outstanding stars slated for action in the Baltimore lineup are Lester Lockett, former luminary for the Birmingham Black Barons and Henry Kimbro, one of the leading performers in the Negro National League, who has been directing the Elite Giants in spring training, at Nashville, Tenn. Then there will be Clyde Sowell and Joe Black promising hurlers.
Manager Lewis Means is expected to start Early King or Ralph Jones on the mound, with "Early-Bird" Ellison or Ray Swanson working behind the plate.
Rounding out the Black Cracker lineup will be: James O'Kelley, first base; Dusty Owens, second base; Johnnie Richardson, short; Willie Marvin Terrell, third base; "Goose" Curry, centerfield and John Ray, rightfield.
