Accomplishments of WPA from the inception of the program to Dec. 31, 1939, have been a boon to both employment and public works in Blaine county, State WPA Administrator Joseph E. Parker stated today, is releasing an accomplishment report for each county in the state. The report covers four and one-half years' activities and includes only completed projects.
WPA accomplishments in Blaine county included 26 miles of road improvement which necessitated constructing 110 bridges and 52 culverts and repairing 20 additional culverts. Street improvement included laying 2340 feet of sidewalk and constructing 600 feet of curbing. Roadside landscaping consisted of work on 18,077 feet.
The building program in the county consisted of constructing civic centers at Chinook and Harlem, bathhouse at the Chinook swimming pool, storage warehouse at Harlem and a new jail at Turner. Improvements to buildings included repairs on high schools in Chinook, Harlem, Turner and Hogeland and grade schools at Chinook and Fairview. Gymnasiums at Turner and Chinook were repaired also.
Recreational facilities were further improved by constructing a swimming pool at Chinook with a surface area of 3300 square feet.
Miscellaneous accomplishments of WPA in the county included repairing nearly 10 miles of ditch on the Milk river irrigation unit, reconditioning a landing field and a hangar with a capacity of four planes and operating sawmills at Hays and Lodgepole where 1,025,000 board feet of lumber were sawed.
Additional accomplishments were achieved at the Fort Belknap Indian reservation where WPA built four miles of road which included repairing four culverts having a total length of 148 feet.
A building program carried on at the agency resulted in constructing three community halls at Lodgepole, Hays and Savoy, a work shop at Lodgepole, two new garages and a dormitory at Hays. Building improvements included reconditioning two schools at Lodgepole and Beaver Creek, a gymnasium at Hays, two warehouses at Fort Benton, an auditorium at Fort Benton and 14 dormitories on the reservation.
Other WPA accomplishments included digging six new water wells and repairing 15,480 feet of ditch on the Milk river irrigation system.
"Limited space prevents listing all accomplishments in detail," Parker stated. "However, complete summaries are on file in the state office of the work projects administration at Butte where further information will be supplied upon request."
