At a meeting of the City Trustees on Monday evening the question of passing an ordinance prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons came up for discussion, and the Board decided that such an ordinance was not practicable. The Sheriff said that it could only be enforced by hiring about a hundred officers to go about and search every citizen. Mr. Fox held that the roughs would disobey the law and have a pull over good citizens who would respect the ordinance. Some years ago a State law was passed covering the case, but it was so generally disregarded and officers of the peace found it so difficult to enforce that it was repealed. If every man could be restrained from carrying weapons it would be an excellent thing as then people would rely upon nature's weapons in case of trouble, and in no instance would death or permanent injury result from a fight. If the manufacture of pistols could be altogether prohibited it would reduce the record of murders and homicides at least 75 per cent and be of incalculable benefit to the community. But an ordinance making the carrying of weapons a misdemeanor cannot be enforced and is only regarded and respected by a class of law-abiding people, whose only object in carrying a pistol is as a defence against the class by whom such an ordinance would be regarded as a dead letter.
