Through the desert hot and dry.
Two creatures wend their way
Over sand-dunes glowing neath
brassy skies,
All through the dreary day
At night by the great oasis
No rest or comfort for the two
Who struggled on, leaving traces
For one to follow through
a turn, a stagger, a fall-
One grasping, reaching for a
There lay the still form
of his hand,
Water. just two drops-all:
The other fell prostrate on the
sand,
Who had given him water-life-
loan, one rose to find the other.

The conqueror dead, the loser living
Lying to gain his life anew.
Though ideals of his brother giving
As so few of us are wont to do,
His writ in paper of the book
And sounded through ages of
time and land
give his life for a friend forsook.
