Editor of the Daily Sun—Gentlemen:
To-day my attention has been attracted for the first time, to another article in last Thursday's issue of the Sacramento Union, springing from the corrupt and loathsomely fertile brain of the "Unwavering Democrat."
With a malignity in perfect consonance with his former effusions, and an unscrupulousness of statement indigenous to this literary profligate, he asserts that six gentlemen, (of whom I am mentioned as one,) have been promised certain office by Dr. Gwin, in the event of his election to the U. S. Senate.
On this part of Messrs. Mandeville, O'Meara and Dameron, named in connection with the Naval Office, and of Messrs. Solomon, Buel and myself, named as aspirants to the U. S. Marshalship, I denounce the assertion that Dr. Gwin has made promises to either one of us, with reference to those offices, as a base and infamous falsehood.
The "breach of faith" heretofore charged in regard to the office I now hold, (being conversant with the entire history of my appointment, involving the action of all the parties interested,) I again pronounce a dirty fabrication; and a fit part and parcel of the innuendoes and filthy slanders, in which the "Unwavering Democrat" seems to indulge with beastly delight.
I have stated the above facts as briefly as possible, and now conclude forever, a war of words with this anonymous scribbler.
Yours Respectfully,
Geo. Pen Johnston.

Main Argument
denounces the 'unwavering democrat''s assertion that dr. gwin promised offices to mandeville, o'meara, dameron, solomon, buel, and himself as a base falsehood; reaffirms that prior charges of breach of faith in his current office are fabrications and slanders.
