YORK (Penn.) SEPT. 26.
Thursday last being the day appointed for the execution of Charles Cunningham, who had been found guilty of the murder of Joseph Rotchrock, at the last court: a large multitude of people assembled at an early hour, so that the street and road leading from the prison to the commons were nearly filled. About 11 o'clock the criminal was taken from the jail and walked to the place of execution, accompanied and supported by the Rev. Messrs. Jacob Goering and Robert Cathcart, who had constantly attended him since the time of his condemnation. It was with difficulty that a passage was opened and order preserved by several companies of militia and infantry who attended on the occasion. But neither this nor any circumstance in the least attracted the attention of the criminal, whose thoughts seemed wholly fixed on himself, earnestly imploring the pardon of his sins, Salvation—through the Redeemer, and strength from God to support him in his last trying hours. Soon after arriving at the place of execution, he addressed the surrounding spectators, and earnestly advised them against the commission of different crimes, and especially those of which he himself had been guilty, viz. gaming, stealing, lying, swearing, Sabbath breaking, and particularly drunkenness, which had brought him to this disgraceful end. He acknowledged the justice of his sentence, declared his being in peace with all men, expressed his hope of Salvation and earnestly solicited the prayers of all present. Two suitable addresses were delivered to the multitude, one by Mr. Cathcart in English. the other by Mr. Goering in German. Each of them also prayed in their respective languages. The criminal said the Lord's prayer in a very fervent manner, and after using these words. "Lord Jesus receive my Soul," which had been previously fixed on as the signal of execution, he was launched into eternity and seemed to die without much struggle. He was only in the 19th year of his age.
