TARTAR EMETIC.-We heard recently of two gentlemen of Pioche who room together having procured a demijohn of very fine whisky, which they kept in their rooms, and previous to eating always indulged in a small "nip." After the liquid had been used for a short time a friend of theirs, whom they never asked to partake of the beverage, procured some tartar emetic and dosed the demijohn with it. The dose worked like a charm, and daily, as they were about to eat, they took their "nip," and as a consequence, a short time afterwards their meal would be strewn on the sidewalk. They swore at the flies, and examined their food particularly to see that no insects were concealed in it; but all of no avail, as they continued to take their usual stimulants from the same demijohn, the same effect was produced. At last the symptoms disappeared on account of one of them coming home late at night, and in endeavoring to light a match to find the candle, the demijohn was upset and broken and the contents wasted. After that they rapidly recovered and digested their food the same as any other citizen.

Story Details

Two rooming gentlemen in Pioche regularly take a nip of whisky before meals from a shared demijohn. An uninvited friend doses it with tartar emetic, causing them to vomit their meals onto the sidewalk repeatedly. They blame flies and check food but continue, until one accidentally breaks the jug at night, ending the effects and allowing recovery.
