State Highway Department Maps Winter Control
400 Tons of Salt Ordered for County:
Summer Jobs Ending
With winter's ice and snow coming up in the not-too-distant future the Union County State Highway Department has been finishing its summer work program and preparing to meet their annual winter headache of keeping the roads clear.
"Our road-crews will follow much the same routine this year that they have in the past, in keeping state highways open and making driving safe as possible this winter," Vinton Stillings, superintendent of the Union County State Highway Garage, said.
Not many cinders will be used, although the garage does have a small stock-pile. Most ice control work in Union County is done with salt and grit, the superintendent explained.
400 Tons of Salt
About 400 tons of salt, to be applied to highways to melt the ice, have been ordered. One carload arrived last week and the rest will be in by Nov. 1. Mr. Stillings said. Another 100 tons of salt are left from last year.
Also on order, to help in ice control, are between 60 and 75 tons of chloride and 100 tons of grit, (coarse sand) to mix with the chloride.
Resurfacing Projects
Several re-surfacing projects are now under way and will be finished before winter. Mr. Stillings says that it is doubtful if the contractor working on Route 7/36 will have that project completed this fall and may receive an additional grant of time.
The west end of Route 36 was finished this summer and 739 from Route 33 to York Center was re-surfaced. This road has been one of the major headaches of the department for several years.
Routes 47 from the Logan county line to Somersville and 347 from Broadway to Pharisburg have also been re-surfaced.
