Full Text

Late accounts from Java mention that the Malays were become so daring that they fitted out single prows, of large dimensions, to attack European ships. On the 8th of June, the Dutch ship Samarang, Captain Jagers, was attacked, on the north side of Java, by a single pirate prow—the successive attacks lasted 4 hours, during which the ship had her Captain and one seaman killed, and the chief mate and 10 seamen wounded—however, at night, the pirate was obliged to lay to, to repair damages, but with every intention of re-attacking in the morning, when fortunately two sails coming in sight, she made off. The ship had 6 six-pounders, with swivels and small arms, and a crew consisting of the Master, mate, and 32 Malay seamen, who behaved extremely well—Mr. J. Gransden a passenger.
