French smugglers are proverbially the sharpest of mortals. A new game was recently discovered on the Swiss frontier that was very clever.
The smugglers got on the cars at Geneva with their valises filled with cigars and their pockets stuffed with dirty linen. As soon as the train started they would rip open the cushions and, extracting the hair with which they were filled, put cigars in its place, and then fill the valises with the dirty linen. After passing the boundary they would repack the valises with the cigars.

Smugglers boarded trains at Geneva with valises of cigars and pockets of dirty linen. They hid cigars in train cushions by replacing horsehair, then put dirty linen in valises to pass customs. After the border, they repacked the cigars into valises.
