Extract of a letter from a Gentleman at York Town, dated November 13, 1777:
I am pretty well informed, that the Tories who remained in Philadelphia are quite tired of their Friends, who prove to them severe matters. The weight of General Howe's little finger proves heavier than the loins of Congress. In short, the British army carry with them a specific, for the cure of Toryism, wherever they go; and those very people that were inimical to General Washington, on his marches through Chester County, now avow themselves staunch friends to America, although they but a few weeks ago were fervently praying for General Howe, but they have seen, felt, fear, and hate him now as much as any body. In short, the success of the northern army, and the bravery of the little fleet and garrisons, at the passes of Delaware river, have put our affairs in a much better posture than they were six weeks ago, so that even the credit of continental money begins to mend in this country, where it was very low indeed; but all these vicissitudes and changes, indicate strongly that the hand of Heaven is with us. Our liberties must and will be established so soon as our virtue and exertions shall show us deserving of the favourable dispensations of Providence; and this I trust will be manifested in the progress of human events.
