Black Crackers Will Have Grand Send Off
By RIC ROBERTS

Folks, our own dear Crackers . . . the Black ones ... are to be home Tuesday. The season is to start with a bang. A holiday has been proclaimed by the Mayor and all the people are laying aside their work to stroll Ponce de Leon Park. All forces are joining hand to make Atlanta the outstanding baseball town of the South. Atlanta holds the record among the whites for that honor and there are enough colored folks here to hold up that end equally as high. Acknowledgedly the greatest football town in the South .. . with one or two record crowds approaching the 10,000 mark . . Atlanta has a team to be proud of in 1935.

The men in charge have sent out from here and grabbed off seven stars from the National League and supplemented them with local talent. What "Jew Baby" Bennett, Jimmy Thompson, the manager and owner, Cross, Holliday. Smith and a few more don't remember about baseball is not written for human consumption.

Opening Day

Opening Day here will bring out some 5,000 fans who are certain to find it agreeable to come out and root in May instead of waiting until October comes back with football and autumn leaves.

PITCHER CROSS

Donald Reeves. six foot superstar from Clark University has been keeping in shape and may get the opening day assignment. Many believe, however, that Pitcher Cross who twirled the 3 to 2 opener in Birmingham, may get the call.

The Black Crackers are a colorful ball club...and Atlanta organization is that. The boys in other parts of the south always think of Atlanta in terms of superlatives and that is why your Crackers have been employed to open the season in Birmingham and Memphis..... the Atlanta name is drawing card in sport, and why not.

Many of the more dignified Atlanta sportsmen are itching to be in the grandstands this minute. A carload of them refrain from attending the white games here because of the great distance that separates the Negro patrons from the center of things. Among these is my friend, Mr Wesley Dobbs who never goes to Ponce de Leon unless he can sit in the grandstand where good, comfortable seats are procurable.

There are hundreds of us who love the game so well, though. that we would likely see a good game from the top of a box car if that was the only manner of doing so. These men you find sitting somewhere inside the premises at any good game where the opposition and defense has something to offer that is good and entertaining.
