NEAR FIRE: BURNS
RESULT IN DEATH
3-Year-Old Daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Anthony Niemier,
711 East Hazeldine Avenue,
Dies at Hospital.
Gertrude Niemier, 3-year-old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Niemier,
711 East Hazeldine avenue, died at
St. Joseph's hospital last night from
the effects of burns received at 4:30
o'clock yesterday afternoon.
The little tot was playing in the
yard of the residence. Neighbors had
built a fire in the rear of their yard
to burn papers and trash. The baby
girl played about the fire and in
some manner her dress became ignited.
Her mother was in the house
at the time. The tot ran to the front
door of the house screaming with
pain as the flames from her clothing
leaped about her face and head.
The mother ran to the child and
attempted to tear the burning clothing
from her body. S. W. Henry, who
operates a baggage delivery system,
was across the street. He ran to assist
the mother and succeeded in tearing
the burning clothing from the
child's body, but not until the flesh
of her face and body had been almost
cooked. Henry received severe burns
on his right hand. The father of the
child, who was lying ill in the house,
left his bed and threw a bed covering
into the yard with which to wrap the
child.
Dr. J. A. Reidy was immediately
summoned and treated the child. An
ambulance of Strong Brothers was
called and she was rushed to St. Joseph's
hospital where she received
further treatment. Her terrible burns,
however, caused death last night.
The condition of the girl's father is
critical and physicians fear that the
shock of his daughter's death may
cause a rapid decline in his health.
