Dr. Capt. John E. Cooke, one of the persons implicated with Brown in the Harper's Ferry business, and who was Brown's Lieutenant on that occasion, is a brother-in-law of Governor Willard, the present Democratic Governor of Indiana. Upon receiving intelligence of Cook's late arrest at Chambersburg, in Pennsylvania, and his remittance to Virginia for trial, the Governor started to Charlestown, the scene of the trial, to see that his relative will have a fair and impartial hearing. D. W. Vorhees, U. S. District Attorney for Indiana, whom he employed to defend Cook, went with him.
