Extract from the American Telegraphe, published in Newfield, Connecticut.

Messrs. Printers,

"A gentleman of undoubted veracity directly from New-York, informed me, that a few days ago, the democrats of that place, went to the Coffee-House, and after having made diligent search for one or two British officers, who were fortunate enough to elude their pursuers, broke open their trunks, and cut to pieces with their swords the regimentals of the said officers.

Now what would we say if an American officer in England was to be treated with such indignity? Would we forbear on such an occasion to load the English with the most opprobrious names & horrid imprecations ? And yet shall we do that to others, which we would not wish them to do to us? Quite different was the conduct of a British Major in that very city before the evacuation. He seeing an American officer (who both you and I are acquainted with) insulted from the galleries, instantly menaced the rabble with a promise to throw them out of it, if they did not immediately desist.

Why did not the police of New-York afford protection to officers of a nation, whose friendship the general or united administration of this country, seems studious to cultivate -Will the corporation plead, that they knew not of it ; or knowing it, they had not power to do it ? Unsecure to dwell in is that country, where a man's life and property is not safe from the brutal attacks of daring ruffians!-- Feeble indeed is that executive, who does not possess power and energy sufficient to crush the lawless insolence of a few democrats! Conscious I am, that every virtuous American will blush for shame, and be filled with indignation, who either heareth or readeth of this diabolical attack on a few defenseless men!"
