Full Text

Situation of Knoxville.

The rebels in the rebel army look to the numbers of our paper that work their way through the lines with a great deal of interest, as we are told, to learn the state of things in this city. We don't know what is in the wind, and if we did, we should not tell the rebels. But we are familiar with Knoxville, and look upon its muddy streets and surroundings every day. Major General Stoneman is here and is backed up with a good set of officers, and as many troops as he wants, provisions, forage and ammunition. And if any rebel command, from Lee down to Hood, wishes to enjoy life in the interior, let them come this way. We should be pleased to see some fool-hardy rebel command either great or small, come raiding upon Knoxville and butting up against what some of their sympathizers classically style "these nigger fortifications." Take us on either side of the river, or both sides at once, and we shall show you life on the ocean wave and a "home in the rolling deep." Most of you started out swearing that you intended to die in the last ditch. We have that ditch prepared.
