From the National Intelligencer.

Gentlemen-As Mr. John Q. Adams, in his late Address on the life and character of Gen. La- favette, has attributed the sentiment of " Rebellion to Tyrants is obedience to God,"to Thomas Jefferson, I have thought proper to show from whence the original idea was borrowed: It was taken from the Epitaph of John Bradshaw, who presided at the Trial of Charles the first, when that monarch was condemned for treason against the people of Eng- land. The Epitaph is a fine composition,and I be- lieve will be very acceptable to your numerous rea- ders; I therefore enclose you a copy.

E.

EPITAPH ON J. BRADSHAW,
(Engraved on a Cannon at the summit of a hill near Martha Bay, Jamaica.)

Stranger,
Ere thou pass, contemplate this cannon!
Nor regardless be told, that under its base lie depo- sited the dust of
JOHN BRADSHAW,
Who, nobly superior to selfish regards, despising alike the pageantry of courtly grandeur, the blast of calumny, and the terrors of royal vengeance, presided in the illustrious band of heroes and pat- riots, who fairly and openly adjudged Charles Stuart, tyrant of England, to a public and exemplary death; thereby presenting to the amazed world, and transmitting down through applauding ages, the most glorious example of unshaken virtue, love of freedom, and impartial justice, ever exhibited on the blood-stained theatre of human actions.

Oh Reader!
Pass not on till thou hast blessed his memory ;
And never, never forget,
that Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God!
