The talk in New York about contesting the Presidential vote of that State, and preventing Garfield from receiving it, is humbuggery of the silliest sort. The fact is, Garfield carried New York in consequence of the bad management of the leaders of the Democratic party and the foolish jealousy and divisions existing among those leaders.
No doubt the Republicans used fraud, but the Democrats ought to have prevented it in time to save the State for Hancock.
We hope no portion of the Southern people, or any Southern member of Congress, will have anything to do with contests got up by New York Democrats or by Northern Democrats generally.
They got the South into difficulty two or three times and then deserted her, and it is about time for Southern Democrats to take care of their own interests and not depend on the aid of so-called Northern Democrats.
The following dispatch purports to give Gen. Hancock's opinion of the matter:
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10.—A letter was received here to-day from Gen. Hancock by an officer of the army who was formerly on his staff, in which Gen. Hancock says emphatically that he has no lot or part in the agitation relative to throwing out the vote of New York, and that he will not have any. He says he is opposed to the agitation and believes that Gen. Garfield was elected and should be inaugurated without any fuss.
