Full Text
Since the commencement of the present Month, elections have taken place in seven States. A few scattering returns are beginning to reach us, but as the polls were kept open in most of them three days, and we have only, in most cases received the first day's balloting, it is impossible to form any correct opinion of the result in any of the States, from the few returns thus far received. From Missouri and Alabama, the Whigs have nothing to hope, or expect; in Illinois the Tories formed a league with the whole body of the Mormons, to vote their ticket. by which means, they will doubtless carry the State. In Kentucky the Whigs are doing as well as they could wish. In Indiana three counties are heard from, in which the Whigs have gained one and lost one member of the Legislature. From North Carolina there are but a few scattering returns. In Halifax county the Whigs have elected their whole ticket. Our readers should not however, feel disheartened, should they at first receive adverse news from those States, where the elections have been closely contested.— We think all is, and will be well, and that the country is safe for Henry Clay, however local causes may effect the result of the present elections.
