Event Details
Col. Geo. J. Benjamin swindled the Rodman House at Rock Island by representing that he was from the wholesale liquor house of Messrs. Mulligan & Co., of St. Louis. He victimized the Tepper House at Keokuk by the same game. He left the Tepper House in double quick time after being detected by a private citizen. He claims to have been a colonel of a New York regiment; wears long, black hair combed back of his ears; is dark-complexioned; has an insinuating address; is a good talker, with any amount of impudence. He travels mainly on his "cheek," and does a pretty successful business.
