A check of the latest statistics of the International League, reveals the Miami Marlins to be second in the league in fielding averages, only .003 behind the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A great deal of credit for the Marlins' fine defensive showing has been attributed to coach Eddie Miller, one of the finest shortstops ever turned out by the National League.
Although Miller's name rarely appears in headlines, members of the Marlins' infield are quick to heap praise on the team's first lieutenant.
Shortstop Bob Micelotta says, "Eddie has really helped me this season, not only in the field but also at the plate."
The veteran second baseman, Bobby Young, regarded by many baseball men to be the finest pivot man in executing a double play added, "I thought I had this second basing business down, but Eddie has really shown me a few new wrinkles." And so it goes right down the line.
Miller himself is quite modest about the whole situation. "I try to keep my eye on the kids, not only in the game, but also in infield practice, and if I notice anything, I just point it out, and they are quick to respond," said the affable coach.
The Marlins return to Miami Stadium, Friday night, July 12, to open an 18-day home stand against the Columbus Jets.
