TRADE MORE THAN DULL. It Is Only the Calm That Comes Before the Storm.
When a reporter can visit a dozen places of business and get no news it is a sure thing that business is dull. Notwithstanding the fact that September is due here tomorrow when the oyster is in bloom and the fall trade is supposed to commence, there is a dearth of everything in Pawtucket and the only active things are horse cars and mixers of consoling beverages.
The laws of trade seemed to be governed by the beat of the public pulse and when that is lethargic then business goes to the dogs, each of whom is supposed to have his day, but the one to whom this day belongs is not yet before the public.
Even the police realize the effects of the weather, and they never seem to be affected by anything, while the average citizen simply keeps cool, (he can't help it) and makes remarks that are not fit to appear in print.
H. is the barometer that governs news and trade and when he is silent, the world apparently ceases to revolve on its axes. If today is a criterion of what the fall will be, even the juicy oyster, the toothsome quail and partridge and the much-needed chestnut will be of little avail to change the navy blue impression of things in general to a cardinal red or even to a roseate hue of pink.
Insurance agents are the only ones that can do business and suicides will be more popular than of late, while the style will be left entirely to the one who desires to get out of a dull place to one that may be more lively.
Uncle Jerry Rusk is the one responsible and on his devoted head will fall the blame of everything in Rhode Island. Weather he does it or not is a question, however, but he gets the blame, while the state gets the bad weather.
