BUFFALOES BATTLE.
Sanguinary Conflict Fought in the New York Zoological Park,
Associated Press.
New York, July 21. None dare now dispute the kingship of Heine among the buffalo in the Bronx Zoological park, for yesterday, after a six-hour battle, he slew his chief rival to the crown. Jud, a lusty young bull.
Yesterday the keepers found the fence separating Jud's enclosure from the king's trampled down. Hair and hide were scattered about and there were other evidences of a sanguinary conflict, while near his stall Jud lay dead. With tail erect and head lowered, Heine waited for others to dispute him, but they did not come.
Jud, with other bulls and several cows, was presented to the gardens about three years ago by T. D. N. Cardeza, of Germantown, Pa. An enclosure was laid out for him beside that of Heine and held apart by the fence, the two often made frantic efforts to get at each other. For more than two years the fence has stood the strain, but yesterday it broke under the continued assaults of Heine,
Getting through, he found his enemy near his stall, and there they did battle.
Heine, a veteran of many conflicts and experience, armed his strength with craft. Before this combination Jud's utmost efforts were unavailing.
