WERE BLINDED BY PEPPER
Mrs. Javornicka Came to Rescue of Man Who Was Being Stabbed by Italian.
New York, May 26. - In one of the most densely populated portions of the city yesterday three thugs made a daring but unsuccessful attempt to rob a trio of bank messengers of $43,000 in cash which the messengers were carrying from a branch of the Jefferson bank at Clinton and Houston streets to the main bank on Canal street. While on First street three men jumped upon them and threw pepper in their faces, at the same time trying to get hold of the money bags the messengers carried.
Mrs. Eva Javornicka, a waitress in a restaurant, saw the attack and ran to the assistance of one of the messengers, and her help caused the arrest of one of the assailants. The other two escaped.
Two of the messengers fared badly at the hands of the thugs. One was cut on the wrists with a knife, another seriously wounded on the head with a blackjack, while the third was nearly blinded by pepper.
None of the money was taken.
The man arrested gave his name as Casimo Riccobone, a plasterer. Later the police arrested Riccobone's father and his two brothers, who are held as suspects.
