To Be October 14
Feeder calf producers of this area met on May 22 at the Martingale restaurant in Tazewell and decided to have a Feeder Calf sale on October 14.
The group also decided to have a Feeder Calf Association and elected the following officers:
Sam Leece, Tazewell, President; W. R. Williams, Richlands, Vice President; J. L. McDonald, Tazewell, Secretary; and J. B. Bailey, Cedar Bluff, Treasurer. The following sales committee was elected to serve with the President and Vice President for the 1959 sale: W. E. Stowers, Wittens Mill; James C. St. Clair, Tazewell; and John McGlothlin, Richlands.
K. C. Williamson, VPI Beef Cattle Marketing Specialist, Allen Randolph, Executive Secretary of Virginia Beef Cattle Producers' Association, and Turner Gilmer, Jr., Castlewood, President, Virginia Beef Cattle Producers Association, gave some advantages of the feeder calf sales, how Virginia cattle have done in the feed lots, and the promotional program.
Calves will be brought to the market on October 13, at which time they will be weighed, graded and penned. The sale will start at 12:30 p. m. on October 14.
All nominations are due in the county agent's office on August 1, 1959. A consignment fee of $1 per head will be collected at the time of nomination and will be returned to the producers provided all calves are brought to the sale.
Tazewell is located closest to the West Virginia Turnpike, the shortest route to the Ohio feed lot. This makes it easier to get Virginia calves into the feed lots in 12 to 15 hours and started on feed. Good quality feeder calves are produced in the county to give another advantage for having a sale.
Calves consigned to other Virginia Feeder Calf Sales have averaged $16.55 more per head and heifers $14.80 more than calves sold on local auction markets during the same time of year.
