There were 2,834 different pupils on the roll this year, against 2,700 in 1883. Of these 1,488 were males and 1,346 females. Of the 1,488 males 804 were white and 684 colored, "a pretty close division. This shows a gain of 134 pupils over the roll of 1883. The following showing is not so good. The pupils in average attendance per quarter during the year were 994—or an average of 15 for each school in the county. The average in 1883 was 941, although we make a gain of 134 on roll, we only make a gain of 3 in average attendance—a large falling off from an already low average. Two new houses were built during the year for white schools and three new houses for colored schools. One of the new houses for colored schools was partially built and paid for in 1883, it is located in Election District No. 5. The other two new colored school houses are in Election Districts No. 2 and 3. One of the new houses for white schools is in Election District No 7 at Simms' Hill—the other in Election District No 9 near Benedict. The attention of parents is earnestly directed to the low average attendance, Absenteeism is the great bane of the public schools.
