CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE CANAL

Conversion of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal from a 12-foot deep barge canal to a 27-feet deep ship canal, large enough to accommodate ocean liners, is provided in the allotment of $5,107,000 for the first year's work, out of the $4,800,000,000 Federal fund for work relief provided by Congress. The project will furnish employment to 1,000 men for at least 18 months.

Of the total of $5,287,500 for the river and harbor projects, $5,107,000 will be for starting the $12,000,000 project of converting the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal into a ship canal, 27 feet deep and 250 feet wide, a project sought for over a decade by shipping interests of Baltimore, Philadelphia and Wilmington.
