POLICE CAPTAINS AND JUSTICE MURRAY.

At a meeting of the Acting Superintendent, Inspectors, and Captains of Police, on December 6, a letter was read to Police Justice Henry Murray, requesting from him an answer in detail to the charges recently made by him against the police captains. The letter specified each charge, and it was presented to Justice Murray by a special committee, which reported at the next meeting its belief that Justice Murray was insincere and the verbal answers were made by him simply to avoid an explicit answer to the questions. He presented the committee an answer which was not satisfactory to it, and he promised that it should not be published. It nevertheless appeared in the papers the next morning. The committee reported that the captains and officers of the Police Department had been vilely slandered by Justice Murray, expressed the opinion that he had shown himself guilty of the finesse and moral obliquity which generally characterize the acts of those not entitled to the confidence and respect of good citizens, and earnestly recommended that prompt and effective measures be taken to disabuse the public mind of the baneful effects produced by the slanderer. At another meeting held Friday, a committee consisting of Inspectors Byrnes and Dilkes and Captains Williams, Killilea, Petty, Tynan and Washburn, presented the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, That the officers and members of the Department of Police of the City of New-York have read the statement in the public journals made by Police Justice Henry Murray, charging the members of the force with the crime of blackmailing keepers of liquor saloons, with other crimes and misdemeanors; and, failing to obtain any satisfactory answer relative to the said charges, we therefore respectfully request the Board of Commissioners of the Police Department to demand from Justice Murray any proofs he may have to substantiate any of the charges or allegations made by him against the members of the force.
