When the fatal period arrived, the proper officer entered the prison at half past eight o'clock, and read to her the decree which announced to her the final rejection of her appeal, and the confirmation of the capital sentence. Upon receiving this terrible intelligence, she at once perceived that she had but a few moments to live. A nervous tremor seized her, and she fell senseless to the ground. Nevertheless, she supported with much resignation the frightful preparations of the toilette, and upon its termination mounted with a tolerably steady step to the vehicle, where her confessor took his place by her side.
When she arrived at the place of suffering she gave herself in the hands of the executioner, and in a few minutes after she had ceased to live.
The rain fell at the time in torrents, but an immense crowd had assembled. For eleven years past there had not been at Nevers a single capital punishment.
