JERUSALEM, June 9. (UP)—The fierce Jebel Durz tribesmen, traditional enemies of the French, are getting the allied invading forces in the mountains of southwestern Syria with great joy, dispatches from the front reported today.
Advices from the front indicated that the Anglo-Free French column driving north from Amman, Transjordania, encountered very little resistance.
The Druz tribesmen, headed by their hereditary chieftain, Sultan El Atrah, were reported to have been among the first to acclaim the allies. The sultan had received British hospitality in Transjordania in 1926 after the Druz revolt when the French sentenced him and his followers to death.
Free French radio stations barraged Syrian listeners with attacks on the Vichy government as allied troops marched into Syria.
Broadcasters before and after the allied march at dawn yesterday denounced the Vichy government for collaboration with Germany and emphasized that the United States was giving all out aid to Great Britain and Free France.
