Full Text
The editor of the Republican claims that the election of a democrat to the state senate this fall from this district will have no effect upon state and national politics. Did he say that when he himself was a candidate? Can any honest republican believe such rot?
Listen. Not a day passes but what the democrats chuckle together and argue: "our time has come. We must use every effort to elect our candidate, and the attempt of Mr. Bailey to disrupt the republican party is our opportunity."
Democrats and republicans all over the state are watching this county. If they can elect democratic legislators from as strong a republican county as this is this fall, they will turn their guns toward another next fall, and they hope by gaining a few counties each year to have a majority in the senate when the time to elect an U. S. Senator arrives. Shall it be said that Winne-shiek started this movement?
Is Mr. Bailey. a man who received the nomination for state senator from this district, and was defeated in Winne-shiek county, but barely elected by the vote of Howard county, and over whom as grievous a charge as he has brought against Dr. Daubney hung, and to this day has not been explained to our knowledge, the fitting one to command the great republican party to depart from its honored principles and help to elect a free silver democrat to the senate.
