I AM AN AMERICAN DAY

Attention is called to "I Am an American Day" by Governor Ernest Gruening in a proclamation reminding the people of Alaska that May 18 is the 14th annual observance of that occasion.

The proclamation reminds us that "This is a special opportunity for Americans to give recognition to the great blessings which their American citizenship confers upon them," and that Alaskans, living as they are in a part of the continent once ruled by an absolutist Czarist government would, if the old sovereignty had continued, now be under the heel of an even more oppressive totalitarian tyranny than then, and that we should be eternally grateful for the historical events which led to our coming under the Stars and Stripes.

The proclamation also points out that, due to our geographical position, we should "feel a specific sense of responsibility to be alert and vigilant and make our democracy a living faith and a shining example of what government by consent of the governed signifies in terms of human happiness."
