Defence of the State.

In obedience to the Governor's orders, calling out the flank companies and artillery of this division, for the defence of the Commonwealth, an efficient corps of troops, belonging to this town, consisting of a company of light infantry, and one of artillery, took up their line of march for Boston on Sunday morning last. Great credit is due both to the field and platoon officers for the promptitude and alacrity with which the orders were executed. The departure of this well disciplined and thoroughly equipped corps was witnessed by a large concourse of citizens, who were highly gratified with the military skill, and soldierlike appearance and martial spirit exhibited by these gallant sons of old Massachusetts, when called to rally round the standard of our beloved and patriotic Governor. "STRONG" and our country seemed to be the only sentiment which pervaded the whole assemblage.

It is a most pleasing reflection that this distinguished statesman has, instead of encouraging the shallow, illiberal schemes of democracy, instead of obeying the unconstitutional, arrogant demand of Mr. Madison, instead of crippling the energies of the state, prudently reserved our resources to meet impending dangers, which the general government have neither the ability nor means to encounter.

While our democrats have been railing and scolding because he would not sacrifice our troops and waste our resources in the abortive attempts to subdue the Canadas, he has been silently, but actively employed in placing the commonwealth in circumstances to meet any exigency that might ensue.

We are informed from unquestionable authority, that the executive military committee have been assiduously engaged for many months in preparing every necessary munition of war, and that Ordnance, arms, fixed ammunition & every appendage necessary for a large army in taking the field, are in complete readiness. Such is the difference between a provident and a rash statesman. Mr. Madison precipitated the nation into a wicked war, and now after he has been two years raising men, and squandering money, his palace has been sacked and destroyed by a handful of men.

Our capitol we are certain never will be laid in ruins by 5000 men. Our governor will never, like a cringing coward, mount his horse, and flee before such a pitiful number of the enemy. The patriotic citizens of this state, can never brook such humiliation. They will rally round their governor, meet danger at the threshold, and chastise the first attempt to disgrace their soil. They will not, however, in any circumstances, forget the authors of this wicked war. The cause of the country can never be identified with supporting James Madison, or tortured into an approval of his conduct.
