IN your paper of yesterday, I observe
Mr. Gerry is considered a jacobin candidate
for the chair of the State of Massachusetts;
however the fact may be, this is not his general
character. By all steady friends to
their country, he is known by the name of
the political Marplot. Before the federal
constitution was formed he was anxious to
obtain one; but when it was on the tapis,
he opposed it with great industry. Whenever his private friends (of which he had many)
counted upon him for an immediate exer-
tion in any case of exigency, he was sure to
occasion embarrasment by delay; and when-
ever the house, of which he was a member,
were hungry at post meridiem, as if to punish
the members either for their political or pri-
vate sins, he was sure to talk and talk until
the whole house, by their muscular contor-
tions and grimace, would frequently re-
semble the personages in a pantomime.

When he was sent to France on an im-
portant embassy, as soon as it became im-
portant to the honor of his country that he
should decide, and be off, for this very rea-
son, he lagged behind, and further to show
that he is not a compleat and abandoned ja-
cobin, when many, from his doubtful con-
duct, expected he would at the last election
give his vote for Jefferson, he decided in fa-
vor of Adams; this last circumstance will
make him governor of Massachusetts; but
if any other friend to Mr. Adams, of any
known importance, had been put up in op-
position, Mr. Marplot would have stood no
chance for the chief magistracy.
