Full Text

The Legislature of this state, will convene in Newport, on Monday next. At this session, the subject of Lotteries will undergo further discussion and investigation. We hope they will be entirely prohibited, because, being one among the many modes of gambling, it has a tendency to corrupt the morals of the people; but if, on account of the many foreign lottery tickets, with which our state would be inundated, if all grants were at once stopped at home, it is thought politic for the present to continue them, it should be done in such manner as to render them a source of revenue to the state. If the people will, at all events, adventure their money in games of chance, let the state treasury catch what it can, and apply it to such purposes as are useful and necessary. The Assembly have taken hold of this subject with considerable vigor, we hope they will have faith to persevere to the end.
