THE MASS MEETING

Attended By a Large Crowd-A Motion to Adjourn Prevails Cutting Off Action of Invitation.

The mass meeting last night in front of the Iron Store was attended by a crowd estimated at all the way from 700 to 1000 people representing all classes and conditions of society. They seemed to be deeply interested in the matter at issue and were anxious to hear it discussed.

Major Zuckerman was in the chair and after he briefly stated the object of the meeting, five minute discussions were announced in order.

Judge Herbert was loudly called for and responded without hesitancy. He stated that as he understood it the meeting was for the purpose of determining whether or not the city should extend to the Florida Athletic club an invitation to bring off the Corbett-Fitzsimmons mill in Ardmore. He was opposed to extending any such invitation, to do which in his judgment would be unwise and unpolitic. He contended that the question of law was the only one that was or would be the hindrance. If Mr. Stuart and his associates could be convinced there is no law forbidding these contests in the territory then the fight would without invitation be ordered to the Chickasaw Nation and Ardmore being better prepared to handle the crowd would most likely be designated as the available place. His speech was well received.

Judge Scott, R. W. Dick and Cad Bennett followed in speeches on a similar line of thought after which a motion to adjourn was put and carried.

The result of the meeting was plainly a victory for that element opposed to the fight backed up by those who want Ardmore to have it if it comes to the territory, but who did not want to put the whole people on record as inviting it to come.

As the ARDMOREITE views the status of the situation no invitation is necessary and more especially until assurances have first been obtained that it is not forbidden by the laws under which we live.
