THE CAPTAIN'S FAULT.

Eighty-Five Were Lost Through Criminal Carelessness.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Dec. 10.—The court of inquiry has found that the steamship Wairarapa, bound from Sydney, N. S. W., to this port, and which was wrecked on Sunday night, October 28, on Great Barrier Island, with the loss of over eighty lives, was lost through the fault of the captain, McIntosh, who was among the drowned.

Chief Officer Noyes, in addition, has been found guilty of negligence, but not to an extent great enough to cause the suspension of his certificate.

The court also found that the boat-drill on board the steamship was a farce, and that the crew failed to do all that might have been expected of British seamen in such an emergency.
