Postmaster George W. Wilkinson is exerting every effort to get the senate to pass the omnibus bill in which is provided an appropriation of $250,000 for the erection of the proposed new federal building in this city, and he has received bundles of letters from congressmen and senators promising their assistance in getting the bill through.
Recently Mr. Wilkinson sent out hundreds of statements showing just what gains the Fargo postoffice has made and just what the handicap in the present building is. Those receiving these statements all seem to be somewhat surprised at the great showing the Fargo office is making and they express the belief that Fargo should be provided with a new building.
Letters were received from Congressman H. T. Helgesen, Congressman P. D. Norton, Congressman George M. Young, John L. Burnett, members of the committee on public buildings and grounds, Senator P. J. McCumber and Congressman Frank Clark, chairman of the committee on buildings and grounds.
Congressman Norton says:
I shall be very glad to continue to assist in the passage by congress of the provisions for an appropriation for the construction of a new federal building at Fargo. The item contained in the omnibus public building bill, which passed the house this week, was for $250,000. Personally, I believe that there should be an appropriation for this purpose of at least $350,000. is not for $500,000.
Congressman Young says:
"Am pleased to have yours of January 24. The public buildings bill has already passed the house. The rub will come in the senate, where there are a larger number of bills to be acted upon and where I presume there is some doubt as to whether sufficient time can be had to act upon it before March 4. I recall, however, four years ago the public buildings bill passed either the last day of the session or the second last day."
Congressman Burnett, of Alabama, promises his aid in getting the bill through, but is somewhat in doubt as to its passing the senate. He urges the "home people" to get busy with their senators.
Congressman Frank Clark, chairman of the committee on public buildings and grounds, Mr. Clark being of Florida, states that he will use his good offices to get the bill through but suggests that the business men of Fargo and the commercial and other organizations get busy on the matter with their representatives in the senate.
Senator McCumber says that he and the other North Dakota senator are doing all in their power and will continue to exert every influence for the passage of the bill.
