Y. W. C. A. Finance Drive This Week

The annual finance campaign of the Douglas Y. W. C. A. with a goal of $5000 will take place this week, March 1 to 6. Beginning Monday and ending Saturday a large group of enthusiastic workers will raise subscriptions throughout the community. Since the Y. W. C. A. is essentially a service organization, it is not self-supporting and depends upon the community for which it exists for its financial support and maintenance. The amount to be raised is based on carefully prepared budget of expenditures, based on actual expenditures of 1925 as well as those estimated for 1926. That 82 per cent of the total amount is spent on direct service to the community, the town of Douglas, is shown in an analysis of the budget. This service includes use and loan of building and equipment, maintenance of a full-time secretary directing the activities, and a program of activities administered through various Douglas women as committee chairman, providing physical, social, mental and spiritual training to Douglas girls and women. Summer conference and the biennial convention expenses make up six per cent of the total of $5000, together with the Douglas contribution toward the work of the national Y. W. C. A. A "safety fund" constitutes the other 12 per cent of the total amount. This includes the participation by this association in the "secretarial retirement fund" and a reserve account of $500. At present the Y. W. C. A. is compelled to run without any savings account as reserve for emergencies; a procedure which the board feels to be both unbusinesslike and dangerous. As finally approved by the board of directors, the budget for 1926 of the Douglas Y. W. C. A. stands as follows:

Items giving direct service returns:
General secretary, salary .....$1800
Maid's wages 600
Rent of building 600
Light, heat, water, telephone... 400
House equipment 100
Office supplies, postage, publicity 100
Committee work including: special service; health, religious, general education social 142
Girl reserve work 150
Camp fund 200

Items of outside relations and contacts:
Conference and convention 200
National Y. W. C. A. work 100

"Safety Fund"
Secretarial retirement fund .. 108
Savings account 500

1926 Budget Total ......$5000

This budget total constituting the goal of the finance workers this year is necessary for the continuation of the present program of activities. Subscriptions to the budget of the Y. W. C. A. may be in single cash payments, quarterly, or monthly payments. That this goal is really a pot of gold at the foot of the rainbow which unlike the proverbial pot can be reached, will be shown each day on the rainbow "thermometer" which will mark each day's progress in totals as well as that of individual teams. Each team will carry a particular color corresponding to one in the rainbow spectrum. The thermometer will be in a conspicuous place.

Watch for it.
