The official canvass of the vote for congressman in this district as shown by the returns at Springfield, shows the following total vote:
Thomas, rep.. 16,873
Hartzell, dem.. 15,146
Roberson, greenback.. 1,000
Total vote.. 33,019
Thomas' plurality 1,727
Majority over all 727
The vote in 1876 was, Hartzell, 14,691. Wiley, 14,671, Hartzell's majority 20. The vote in 1878 was—Thomas, 12,687, Allen, 12,074, Davis, greenbacker, 2,454. The greenback vote shows a decrease of 1,454 from the vote of 1878, while Thomas' vote shows an increase of 4,186. Hartzell's vote shows an increase of 3,072.
