Last week the army repeated the experiment of laying a pontoon bridge over the Potomac. This was done by the corps under the command of General Benham.
Among the distinguished persons present were Postmaster General Blair, Secretary Fox, General Heintzelman, General Stoneman, General Frank Blair, Captain Wise of the Navy Department, and quite a number of army and navy officers. The occasion was also graced by the presence of ladies.
In eight minutes from the time the signal flag was raised the bridge was laid; in eight minutes more it was swung across the river to the opposite shore, and in twenty-five minutes from the commencement of the work, parties in carriages and on foot were crossing on the bridge at once firm and substantial. Every thing went off successfully, as might have been predicted of any operations under the direction General Benham, to whom and his admirable corps of officers and men the country is indebted for most valuable and efficient services on occasions when a single mistake might have hazarded the safety of an army.--[Washington Chronicle.
