Billings will be the site Monday, Dec. 9, of a hearing on wage rates and prices for the 1958 sugar beet crop, Leo S. Kolstad state agricultural stabilization and conservation administrative officer, reminded sugar beet producers this week.
The hearing will begin at 10 a. m. at the Roosevelt school building.
All interested persons are invited to appear at the hearing to express their views and appropriate data regarding the Department of Agriculture's proposal which was published in the Federal Register of October 23, 1957. An exhibit and explanatory statement concerning the proposal is available at any county ASC office.
The Billings hearing will be one of a series of five designated to secure information for consideration of the secretary in determining fair prices and wages. One condition which producers must meet to qualify for payments under the Sugar Act of 1948 is to pay wage rates not less than those determined to be fair and reasonable by the secretary after public hearing and investigation.
The act also provides, as a condition for payment, that producers who process sugar beets grown by other producers must pay prices determined by the secretary to be fair and reasonable.
The Billings hearing will be the only one in Montana, Kolstad said.
Other hearings in the series will be at Detroit, Fargo, Salt Lake City and Greeley.
