"I received your obliging letter, and a volume of the debates of your Convention, of both which testimonies of your regard I have the justest sense, and return you, dear sir, my sincere acknowledgments. The Federal Constitution will be adopted by us. I wish the Federal Convention had provided that none but wise and understanding men should read and give their opinion of it. The Constitution had at first some powerful opposers in this state, but the opposition at present is feeble; they have had time to deliberate, and their tempers are now come to. The reception and discussion it met with from your state, has removed the film of prejudice from the eyes of many well-meaning men of our state. They have agreed to speak well of it. A few hypocrites and old tories, whose approbation we do not value a straw, remain unconverted. It is not in the power of every one to understand its excellence; it is the gift of God; so while such declaim against it, and strip off the garb of tyranny, as they call it, they only discover their own nakedness."
By advices from the southward we are informed, that a conduct similar to that of South-Carolina will be pursued by the states of North-Carolina and Virginia, in adopting the Federal Constitution, by large and respectable majorities.
