Because the Democrats in Congress did a foolish thing last session, by passing an act to enable Colorado to get into the Union, isn't a good reason why they should do a more foolish thing by trying to keep her out. Two years ago, when the whole country felt that it was a safe time to chastise the Republicans of the Grant administration; when all the States either voted Democratic or exhibited the worst form of staggers in the Republican line, Colorado caught the infection and made her virgin experiment in giving a decided Democratic majority. There, as elsewhere, the people hadn't become suddenly enamored of Democracy, but in sheer cussedness they gave the election over to the Democrats to run the entertainment for one season only. On the strength of this single Democratic majority the Democrats assumed that Colorado would be a Democratic State; that it would give them two Democratic Senators and three Democratic electors, and they assented to the scheme of the more knowing Republicans, passed the Colorado enabling act and made her a State. As the Presidential year called out a full vote and drew party lines where the Republican majority of the population is equal to fifty thousand in Pennsylvania, and the election of a Republican State administration, United States Senators and Presidential Electors was just as natural as that tadpole leaves frog; and now because the Democrats have foolishly stubbed their toes against the State of their own creation, they keep her Representative shivering on the outside of Congress. Colorado was fairly admitted: her Congressman should be in his seat, and her electoral vote will go to Hayes with the consent of every fair-minded member of both Houses.
