From the latest Paris papers, May 24, 1795.]

THE Commonwealth is once more saved.--
Yesterday, the triumph of true principles over
the designs of cut throats, gave the finishing
blow to Jacobinism: and if all the departments
have now the courage to imitate our example,
there will soon be left no trace of the ferocity,
of those monsters (the Jacobins) who would if
possible, lay waste all Europe.
Every section of Paris, is assembled this day,
to purify the armed force of the capital. We
are assured that a most excellent spirit is mani-
fested in all of them, and that the Terrorists at
last begin to tremble at the powerful measures
taking against them. All who have been de-
nounced for their bad Principles, are disarmed
and imprisoned. Thus, except a few bad fel-
lows who may have escaped in the crowd, the
population of Paris, may now be said to be pur-
ged.
The military commission is also busied with-
out intermission in trying, and condemning the
chiefs of the last conspiracy.
One fact worthy of remark, is that if those
who are accused of royalism, have taken an ac-
tive part in the late troubles, it has always been
in favour of the government. For as the late
insurrection was a war of robbers against pro-
prietors, all those who had a little patrimony
to preserve, naturally lent all their strength to
crush the pillagers.
It is said that the Committee of General Wel-
fare had lately enlarged from prison, several men,
known for the depravity of their manners and
the ferocity of their principles, who have not
a little contributed to excite the last revolt.
If this is true, the Committee will no doubt
repair a fault or rather an imprudence which
might have been fatal to the public happiness.
One bad effect of the late convulsion, has
been, that three hundred thousand citizens of
Paris, have been four whole days without work-
ing. Those who consider the loss suffered by
a state, when general labour ceases for any
length of time, may calculate that of the French
Empire from the inaction in which we have
been, for near half a decade,
The feast of Pentecost, has also taken ano-
ther day from work, all Paris has celebrated
this holy day: for the shops are every where
shut. Philosophers will call it superstition;
but we answer them, that such superstition at
least, is not so dangerous as those savage how-
llings, with which for almost six years, the Ja-
cobins have made the vaults of their dens re-
echo. It is better to be a little credulous, and
respect the life, honour, and property of our
fellow-men.
