The country is very rapidly developing a new breed of cranks. The dispatches tell of several who demanded money of imaginary debtors. One wanted $5,000 of Sergeant Fagan of the New York police, and threatened trouble. He was locked up. Another demanded $75,000 of Sergeant Mangin, most of it in pennies. He is in a cell waiting to be paid. A third crank in Harlem demanded $50,000 from Captain Brooks of the police. He flourished a pistol as he yelled for his money, but the officers managed to get him to prison.
This is quite an array of cranks of that class to develop in New York in one day. The wonder is that no one was hurt. Such men are very dangerous to have around. An assassin is bad enough, but even an assassin is controlled by some fear of the law. But a crank who stands ready to blow himself up along with his imaginary debtor is a very different sort of a customer.
In dealing with such lunatics it is well to keep cool. Humor their whims in some sort of fashion until they can be taken into control, and then they can be put where they belong.
